The objective of WP3 is to develop novel aquafeeds replacing unsustainable protein and lipid sources with high nutritional value from lower trophic aquatic organisms i.e., polychaeta H. diversicolor, and gammarid G. locusta (WP1). These feeds will be tested on economically important aquaculture species such as the European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Additionally, the use of natural bioactive compounds as feed additives such as astaxanthin produced by C. glutamicum will be assessed in feeding trials with rainbow trout Onchorynchus mykiss. Our aim is not only to maintain growth and health of the target species but enhance survival and growth performance at critical life stages (i.e., larvae and juveniles of seabass, trout and shrimp) and trigger the reproductive performance of broodstock (shrimp). We aim to produce high value aquafeeds containing sustainable feed ingredients that can be presented to relevant industries.
