The Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) is one of the largest faculty-spanning central academic institutions at Bielefeld University. It is dedicated to bundle the biotechnological activities and research projects at the university, to foster cross-linking of research approaches and technologies from different research fields and to develop innovative projects. Bielefeld University was founded in 1969 and has around 24,000 students, among them 1700 international students.
The Wendisch Lab focuses on bacterial biotechnology. Since 25 years industrially relevant bacteria are characterized in fundamental research projects and the gained knowledge is transferred by the development of target compound producing strains and bioprocesses. For example, utilization of several alternative carbon sources by Corynebacterium glutamicum, which is used in the million-ton-scale amino acid production, has been enabled. Moreover, pathway engineering has led to new products such as the red-colored, antioxidant carotenoid astaxanthin.
In SIDESTREAM, we are involved in WP1 and WP2. We will enable utilization of side streams from aqua- and agri-culture for growth of C. glutamicum and production of astaxanthin, which will be used as supplement to rainbow trout feed in WP3.
